Difference Between CID and CBI
In India, there are two special forces that are set up by the government to solve various criminal cases. These forces are CID and CBI, wherein the former operates at state level, and has limited powers while the latter operates at national level and thus they solve cases which require severe investigation.
Nowadays, in the newspapers and every news channel we came across headlines concerned with murders, corruptions, scandals, robbery, assaults, suicides, accidents, dowry, crime against women (like acid attacks, rapes, molestation), etc. The percentage of crimes has increased gradually in all the parts of the world.
Every country is trying to cope with this, and has set up various departments for this. In India too, CID and CBI are working in order to get over this problem, so check out the difference between the two forces.

Definition of CID
Crime Investigation Department is abbreviated as CID, is an investigation and intelligence department of state police in India. It is a detection and the investigation department, which requires a high level of investigation in the cases of murder, assault, riots, etc. On the recommendation of the Police Commission, CID was established by the British Government in 1902. The special training is given to the officers before taking them into CID.
The cases to CID are handed over by the state government, but at times, the high court of the concerned state also assign them cases for the investigation.
Definition of CBI
Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI, is an agency of the Central Government of India, which looks after the offences related to the national interest like economic and corruption cases. The cases require severe investigation due to the nation’s safety. The agency was established in 1941 and was named as the Central Bureau of Investigation in April 1963, headquartered in New Delhi. The DSPE (Delhi Special Police Establishment) Act, 1946 has given the powers of investigation to the CBI.
The central government authorizes to investigate cases in the state with the consent of the state government. But however, the Supreme Court and the High Court can order CBI to investigate the crime case in any state of the country, without the consent of the state government.
Key Differences Between CID and CBI
- The significant difference between the CID and CBI is that the CID works within the state, whereas the CBI works across the nation.
- The area of operation of CID is small while the area of operation of CBI is large.
- After graduation a candidate has to the join police force thereafter he has to pass a criminology exam for getting into CID but for getting into CBI he has to pass CGPE conducted by the SSC board.
- CID deals with criminal cases within the state including riot cases, murder cases, etc. but the CBI deals with economic and corruption cases, fraud, embezzlement across the country including the interstate ramifications too.
- CID, established in 1902 by the British Government, while CBI was set up in 1941 as the Special Police Establishment.
